Cross Country (Boys & Girls 6-8, Fall)
My name is Pete Hoyem, and I've been coaching Oak-Land Middle School Cross Country for 15 years.
Start date is September 8 and ends October 14.
Your coach – Hi! My name is Pete Hoyem. I have competed on high school and college cross country teams, and still run competitively, completing 20 marathons in my lifetime. Running has changed my life, and my start to this fantastic sport was in middle school just like you!
While this season will look different than other years, I am confident athletes have an enjoyable experience and grow in their fitness. A few details:
Practice times:
FOR THE FIRST WEEK ONLY:
- The first week includes a Friday practice:
- Tuesday 9-8-20= B practice with 6th grade and any other 7/8 graders that signed up B practice
- Wednesday 9-9-20= A practice with 6th grade and any other 7/8 graders that signed up A practice
- Thursday 9-10-20= B practice with 6/7/8 grade
- Friday 9-11-20= A practice with 6/7/8 grade
THE REST OF THE SEASON:
- Monday's – A athletes practice in person; B athletes practice at home
- Tuesday's – B athletes practice in person; A athletes practice at home
- Wednesday's – A athletes practice in person; B athletes practice at home
- Thursday's – B athletes practice in person; A athletes practice at home
- No practice Friday's (except for 9/11/20)
Practice start at 2:45 on the track, and end at 3:45.
What to bring:
- Running shoes
- Shorts and a t-shirt; As the weather cools off it's always a good idea to bring a sweatshirt over the t-shirt as well. I have a limited number of Oak-Land hoodies and sweats for sale; message me if interested.
- Mask – athletes will not be required to wear a mask while they run, but it's required to bring one to practice for situations outside of actual running.
Competitions
I will work to provide inter-squad competitions, and hope to compete with SMS at some point in the season. More details to come.
Expectations
I expect you to come to practice every day. (Monday's and Wednesday's for “A” athletes, and Tuesday's and Thursday's for “B” athletes). I also will be asking for you to email me results from your workouts when you are not here, but have practice (Monday's and Wednesday's for “B” athletes, and Tuesday's and Thursday's for “A” athletes)
If you are not feeling well, please DON'T come to practice! Simply email me and do a workout on your own if you are feeling well enough to do so. I do expect every athlete to either show up at practice when they are assigned to, OR let me know they will not be able to make it.
Communication
I will be setting up a Schoology page for Oak-Land Cross Country this year. The course is titled Oak-Land Cross Country 2020, and the access code is: QZN9-FJG8-4R5TH This site will provide schedule updates, as well as team results. Athletes are encouraged to enroll on this site

Coaches will provide some type of work out plan for off school attendance days.
- Staff are required to wear a mask at all times. Stay out the 6’ bubble of any participant at all times.
- Participants should have a mask with them to put on when necessary. They do not need to wear them while exercising but do need to wear them arriving to and departing practice; listening sessions lead by the coach participants should wear them. Keep participants 6’away from others as often as possible.
- Accurate attendance must be kept daily to aide in any contact tracing if needed.
- If a participant becomes ill, please contact the parent immediately to have them picked up, have them wait off to the side within sight of you. Email me with any concerning health issues.
- Lockerooms should be used for changing only after school before and after practice. Participants should not leave anything in the lockeroom.
- Backpacks: Have the participants set their bags at least 6’ apart so they do not congregate at break time and end of practice.
- Med kits: med kits will be equipped with hand sanitizer and sanitary wipes. Hand sanitizer should be used a minimal of 3 times daily- At the start of practice and at least one hand sanitizer break during practice and one at end of practice.

Swim (Girls 6-8, Fall)
Start date: August 28, 2019
We will be having practice Monday through Thursday 2:30-4:00, please have your parents pick you up by 4:20 at the main doors. We have a change in times this year due to needing to share the pool with Stillwater Middle School. We will have the pool to ourselves the first half hour or so, then we will share it for some time with the other team but we also need to allow SMS to have the pool towards the end of practice. It might be a little crowded, but we will make it work! I will move the team meeting to happen AFTER practice so it might be a good idea to have an extra towel, one to stay dry when on deck (it gets so cold) and one to dry off after a shower.
The swim meet schedule is posted on the Suburban East Conference website, access can be made through the Oak-land Middle School site under athletics. There is also an app to download to the phone, this also is on the website. Please be aware there may be changes, so be sure to check the website or app often.
On the days we have a swim meet we will be bussed to the location if it is an away meet. I need all swimmers to meet me at the main school doors immediately after the school day to be on time for the bus. I would recommend backpacks, instruments, etc be brought with, rather than left at school, as I am not sure how much access to the school there will be when we return. I will have all swimmers call their parents to let them know when we are leaving the meet. Parents can be at OMS 20 minutes after the phone call to pick you up. I need to stay until all swimmers are picked up and I would like to be able to get home at a reasonable time! I would prefer we all ride the bus to and from the meet to stay together as a team. I understand there will be times you need a ride home from the meet. Please provide me with a note from your parent if this is going to occur.
I highly recommend a good, healthy snack (protein!!) prior to swim practice. It's a long school day and we are swimming for two hours and you will need some nutrition.
Items needed: One piece racing suit (any brand or color), goggles, and swim cap. We are ordering team swim caps again this year and I recommend you purchase one so we look like a team, purchased through Fee Pay for $3.00. We will have optional Stillwater Swim t-shirts ($12.00) and knapsacks ($5) to purchase and can do so by using Fee Pay, the deadline will be 9/6/19 to order. I will have sizes of the t-shirts available to try on to make sure you know what will fit you before ordering.
I would like each swimmer to put my cell phone number in their phone before the start of the season so you can text or call me if you are not going to be at practice or a meet or be late.I need to know EACH AND EVERY TIME there is a conflict. M The only reasonable excuse for missing practice or a meet is if you are home sick or have an urgent family conflict. If you need to meet with a teacher after school regarding homework or missed exam, please let me know and get to practice immediately after. It is imperative that we make all practices, we are on time and give our best effort so we can build a team that can rely on each other.
I look forward to seeing all of you on our first day of practice on 8/28. Change into your suit in the locker room and meet me on the pool deck at 2:30. Doors to the pool deck are just off of the showers.
